An American Institution Dating Back to 1837

In U.S. history terms, 60 years ago isn’t that long ago. Interestingly, Deere & Company essentially had its roots approximately 60 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed.

John Deere was born in Rutland, Vermont, in 1804. By 1837, after moving to GrandDetour, Illinois, to evade bankruptcy in his birth state, Deere opened a blacksmith shop, and in essence, a truly iconic American company was born.

John Deere died in 1886, and the presidency of Deere & Company passed to Charles Deere. By now the company was manufacturing a variety of farm equipment products in addition to plows, including wagons, corn planters, cultivators.

Today, Deere & Company employs approximately 47,000 people in 27 countries worldwide.
